Dairy Free Cream Sauce Base

 

 

When we went dairy free several years ago the thing I missed most, besides cheese of course, was all the delicious creamy dishes that were family favorites. I set out to find the best dairy free cream sauce I could find that would satisfy my desire for all things rich and creamy. After some trial and error this dairy free cream sauce was the result.

 

In addition to the base recipe I will also be sharing my 3 favorite adaptations- Stroganoff, Alfredo, and chicken pot pie. So without any further delay let’s dive in.

 

What You’ll Need

  • Sauce pan
  • Coconut or avocado oil
  • Flour blend of choice
  • Water or dairy free milk of choice
  • Celtic sea salt or pink Himalayan salt

Directions

  1. Add 1 table spoon of you chosen oil to your sauce pan
  2. Add 1 cup of your chosen flour to the oil and mix until a thick paste forms.
  3. Turn your heat to medium and add 2 cups of room temperature water or dairy free milk of choice.
  4. Mix well and turn the heat to high. Continue mixing until it thickens. Reduce to a simmer and continuing to stir.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Use in your favorite recipe and enjoy.

stroganoff

Here’s everything you’ll need to turn this dairy free cream sauce into a cream of mushroom soup for stroganoff

  • Mushrooms
  • Rosemary
  • Garlic

Directions

  1. Add 2 cups of diced mushrooms to your cream base and cook on medium heat for 10 minutes.
  2. If desired use an immersion blender to cream the sauce.
  3. Add 2 table spoons of garlic and rosemary to your cream sauce and simmer for 5 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  4. Serve over your meat and pasta and enjoy

 

Alfredo Sauce

Here’s everything you’ll need to turn this cream sauce into a dairy free Alfredo sauce

  • Blender
  • Raw cashews (soaked over night)
  • Garlic
  • Italian seasoning

Directions

  1. Take 1 cup of soaked cashews, rinse, and put them into a blender with 1/2 cup of water. Blend until smooth
  2. Add the blended cashews to your cream sauce base.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon of garlic and Italian seasoning.
  4. Simmer for 10 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  5. Serve over your pasta and enjoy.

 

chicken Pot Pie

Here’s what you’ll need to turn this dairy free cream sauce into chicken pot pie filling.

  • Cooked chicken breasts
  • Peas
  • Carrots
  • Poultry seasoning
  • Pie crust

Directions

  1. Add 1 pound of cubed chicken breasts to your cream sauce.
  2. Add 1 cup of peas and diced carrots and cook on medium heat for 5 minutes.
  3. Reduce heat to a simmer and add 2 tablespoons of poultry seasoning. Simmer for 5 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  4. Add the filling to your pie and bake for 30-40 minutes at 400⁰ or until golden brown.
  5. Serve and enjoy.
