DIY DIAPER CREAMÂ
Our modern world is a toxic one. Products lining the store shelves are loaded with endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, irritants, and more. We all need to be mindful of the ingredients found in the products we use but it’s especially important when it comes to babies.
Babies are especially vulnerable to toxins and many of the so called “gentle” and “safe” products on the markets for babies are anything but gentle and safe. Many “natural” products contain harmful ingredients like talc, fragrance, or petroleum and unfortunately diaper cream is no exception.
There are thankfully many brands out there that are truly gentle and safe for our little ones but I find they are often expensive. And while I do on occasion use Earthley’s Baby Balm for a diaper cream I find making my own to be a simple way to ensure my little one has a truly non toxic and safe product to use when needed.
This diaper cream is fairly inexpensive to make and is extremely easy. However, on the occasions you find yourself in need of a product ready to go I highly recommend Earthley. Their products are among the cleanest on the market and they are more affordable than most natural brands. Use my code MHL10 to get 10% off your first purchase.
What You’ll Need
- Coconut Oil
- Non nano zinc oxide (I get mine here)
- Small glass jar with lid ( I use these)
- Beeswax ( I get mine here)
- Lavender Essential Oil ( optional and not recommend until baby is at least 6 months old. Find my favorite brand of essential oils here)
- Medium pot
Directions
1. Fill your pot approximately half way with water and bring to a boil.
2. Place 1/2 cup of coconut oil and 2 tbsp of beeswax into your glass jar.
3. Remove your pot of boiling water from burner and carefully place the glass jar into the hot water. Be sure to not let any water spill over into your glass jar.
4. Allow the coconut oil and beeswax to fully melt and then carefully remove the jar from the pot of water. Use canning tongs or an oven mit as the jar will be hot.
5. Mix in 1 tbsp of non nano zinc oxide and lavender Essential Oil if using. (See dilution chart below to ensure you are properly diluting your essential oils to keep you and your baby safe)
6. Leave the jar on the counter to cool completely (this will take approximately 2 hours. If you need the diaper cream sooner you can let it sit on the counter for 15 minutes and then transfer it to the fridge. It should be cool in approximately 1 hour)
Final Thoughts
The diaper cream should be solid but will quickly melt from body heat.
We have used this diaper dream for more than 11yrs and have had no issues using it with cloth diapers.
We store it at room temperature and have used in it for as long as 6 months without it going rancid. It could potentially be good for longer but we always use up a batch within 5-6 months.
This diaper cream can double as a sunscreen. We rarely use sunscreen but have found it effective when we do need it.
