Natural muscle rub

Whether you’re an athlete, a mom chasing after kids, or you slept on your neck funny, we all get sore and tight muscles from time to time. Over the counter (OTC) pain meds are harmful to our health because they deplete glutathione, are hard on our livers, and a full of toxins. Store bought muscle creams and rubs are full of synthetic ingredients, preservatives, and fillers that are equally harmful. So what’s a naturally minded person to do?

Thankfully there are many natural muscle rub alternatives out there like Earthley’s Magic Muscle Ease as well as natural alternatives for pain management like Arnica or Pain Potion.

DIY

Making your own natural muscle rub is also easy to do and can be very cost effective.

what you’ll need

  1. Small glass jar with lid
  2. A stainless bowl or pot
  3. Peppermint or spearmint essential oil
  4. Lavender essential oil. I get my oils here
  5. Carrier Oil like coconut or jojoba oil. We mostly use coconut but will use jojoba or olive oil depending on what we’re making.
  6. Shea or Coco butter (this is optional and will make your rub a little thicker and creamier vs a more oily consistency)

DirectioNs

If you opt out of Coco or Shea butter or if your using an oil like jojoba oil you can skip to step 2.

  1. Place 1/4 cup Shea butter and 1/4 cup coconut oil in a glass jar and place the jar in a bowl or pot of hot water to melt. Once melted remove from the water and let it cool a little.
  2. Add 25 drops of peppermint or spearmint and 15 drops of lavender to your liquid *Peppermint is not recommended for young children or breastfeeding mothers, so spearmint would be a better choice.
  3. Stir thoroughly every 2-3 minutes as it cools.
  4. Place the lid on the jar and store it for up to 6 months. It doesn’t need to be refrigerated but if it’s hot out it will melt a little.

Check out this dilution chart from Simply Earth. Since we have children we make most things with a 1-2% dilution. You can increase or decrease the dilution of this recipe to suit your needs.

application

Apply the muscle rub on sore and tight muscles as needed. I will sometimes apply hourly if I’m dealing with a particularly painful or tight muscle.

This rub also makes an excellent massage oil. Enjoy!
