DIY Natural Sunscreen

This DIY Natural Sunscreen was actually my first DIY recipe I had ever made. I was a first time mom and summer was quickly approaching. I didn’t want to use mainstream sunscreens for my baby but at the time natural sunscreens were few and far between and they were expensive. Of course many years later I learned that many of those “natural” alternatives weren’t really natural. So I was glad that I had my trusted recipe to fall back on.

The other thing that makes this recipe a winner in my book, is that it doubles as a butt paste! That’s right, if you’ve got a little in diapers this DIY Natural Sunscreen can serve a dual purpose as a diaper cream.

This recipe has just 4 simple ingredients but can also be made with as little as 2 ingredients. Let’s get started!

Directions

  1. Add 1/4 cup of each coconut oil and shea butter to your glass jar with 1 tbsp of beeswax.
  2. Fill a pot with water and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and set jar in the warm water. (You can use a microwave or tea pot to heat the water as well and pour into a bowl instead)
  3. Allow the ingredients in your jar to melt thoroughly.
  4. Add 2tbsp of the zinc oxide and stir thoroughly.
  5. If desired add in the essential oils of your choice.
  6. Place in the fridge to cool and harden.

*Optional short cut recipe*

You can make this recipe with only the coconut oil and zinc oxide it won’t be as creamy but will still work well. I’ve made it this way several times when I’m short on ingredients.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If using essential oils be sure to dilute the oils with 1/2% to 1% depending on the age of your children. Some aromatherapist recommend zero essential oils before the age of 6 months. Be sure to do your research to ensure the safe use of essential oils.

You can store this DIY Natural Sunscreen at room temperature. Because we rarely use sunscreen 1 jar lasts us all summer.
