Who doesn’t love candles?

Who doesn’t love candles? The aromas, the ambiance. Whether you’re adding a little mood lighting to a romantic dinner or brightening up your decor, it’s safe to say most everyone loves candles at least a little bit. When I was in college, I loved having candles just about anywhere in the house. When my husband and I first got married we loved having a candle lit dinner. Unfortunately, what I didn’t know at the time was that the majority of candles used are full of toxic and harmful chemicals.

smell tHose toxins

If you’ve been around the holistic world for any length of time you probably already know candles aren’t the best because of the fragrance. If you’re unaware of the toxicity of fragrances, you can read about them here. Fragrances, however, aren’t the only concerns when it comes to candles. Candles are made from paraffin wax, which is a petroleum-based substance. Additionally, the dyes used to color the candles are also petroleum-based. When lit petroleum-based candles emit toxic chemicals such as benzene and toluene into the air. These chemicals have been known to cause damage to the brain, lungs, nervous system, and cause developmental difficulties or delays, as well as an increased risk for certain cancers. This holds true for most wax melts as well.

Choosing better alternatives

When comparing petroleum-based paraffin wax candles or melts to vegetable based, dye and fragrance-free candles or melts; it was found that the latter didn’t release those toxins into the air. Therefore, when shopping for candles you want to look for beeswax or soy-based candles that are both dye and fragrance free. There are many natural candles out there that are scented with essential oils, which is a much better alternative to synthetic fragrance. This will allow you to enjoy the ambiance and aroma of candles without the harmful toxic chemicals from in petroleum-based candles that are loaded with toxic fragrances.

Final thoughts

It’s important to note that even burning a candle scented with natural scents from essential oils is not without it’s risks. Some essential oils are not safe for some people in some cases. Read more about essential oil use and safety here.

There is also debate within the natural community about burning essential oil based candles and diffusing essential oils, and that they still emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and pollute the air quality. I highly encourage everyone to do their research and make the best decision for them and their family.

We personally choose to burn essential oil candles and diffuse essential oils, but only on occasion and for short periods of time. I personally don’t think the risk of VOCs from essential oils out weigh the benefits when candles and diffusing are used sparingly.
