What’s that Smell?
Soaps, shampoos, lotions, body sprays, and so much more are filled with wonderful smells. At least I used to think so. Before learning just how toxic artificial fragrance is my house was filled with them. From personal care items, to candles, to cleaning products I used items with fragrances multiple times a day. Since removing fragrances from our home, I now find the smell of them quite disgusting!
Fragrances are in everything!
Fragrance is everywhere and in everything! Unless you go out of your way to avoid fragrances there is a good chance you could pick up a random item from your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room and somewhere in the ingredients, fragrance will be listed. Hygiene products like shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and more almost always have fragrance. Even companies that claim to be “natural” will often list fragrance as one of their ingredients. Cleaning products like dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, all-purpose cleaning sprays, and more is another category of products laden with fragrances. Once again even “natual” products will often times contain them. It’s important to read labels when purchasing products and to look for products that are fragrance free or that are scented with natual fragrances like essential oils and herbs.
What’s the big deal?
A single fragrance can be made with up to 1,000 different chemicals and in any combination. These chemicals aren’t disclosed or regulated under the name of trade secret. Many of them are cancer causing, hormone disrupting, and can lead to birth defects and infertility. It is estimated that at least 75% of the chemicals used in fragrances contain phthalates have been proven to reduce sperm counts and cause reproductive malformation, and have been linked to liver and breast cancer, diabetes, and obesity This means, that whenever you see the word fragrance in a list of ingredients, you cannot know what is actually in the products you are using and you are putting yourself and your family at risk to a variety of concerning conditions.
What products do you need to consider switching out for safer fragrance-free alternatives?
