Toxins everywhere
We are surrounded by more toxins today than at any other point in history. From the products we use with in our home, to the water we drink, the air breath, and the food we eat; if we don’t actively try to reduce our toxic exposure, we will be overburdened by them, and our health will suffer for it.
Herbicides and pesticides are among two of the most harmful toxins that we can be exposed to; they are detrimental to our health and to the environment. One of the most widely used and dangerous herbicides is glyphosate. Glyphosate is America’s number one weed killer and virtually impossible to avoid. It’s widespread use in gardens, laws, and in agriculture across the globe leaves us all exposed to it on one level or another. Conventional food and drinking water are almost always contaminated with glyphosate along with the other common chemicals that it is paired up like Atrazine or 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Even samples of rainwater have been found to be contaminated with glyphosate.
Whats the big deal with herbicides and pesticides?
Why does this matter? Well for one thing glyphosate tricks your body in to storing it by mimicking essential minerals. Which means that each exposure is accumulative. So even if your daily exposures are minimal, they will add up over a lifetime. Additionally, by mimicking essential, glyphosate will actually deplete you of those minerals. So not only does it trick your body in to storing it, glyphosate exposure, can lead to deficiencies in mineral like iron and manganese. These deficiencies can lead to a variety of health concerns such as diabetes and anemia.
Other concerns of glyphosate toxicity include:
- Disruption of gut health which can lead to poor immune health and inflammation.
- Disruption of neurotransmitters which can lead to anxiety and depression as well can cognitive dysfunction and hormone dysregulation.
- Disruption of our biochemical process which can lead to cancer, infertility, and autoimmune disorders.
What can we do?
Now we can never avoid all exposures to glyphosate or other pesticides and herbicides. It’s just not possible until such a time they are no longer used on a large scale as they are now. There are, however, many things you can do to reduce your exposure. First things first, don’t use them in your own yard or garden. Choose safer and more natual alternatives instead. Secondly, buy organic food and products as much as possible. While organic products will not be 100% glyphosate free because of cross contamination it will, however, be a much smaller exposure compared to conventional products and foods. Lastly, certain foods or herbs can actually help protect against and reduce the effects of glyphosate toxicity. Kelp, pro and prebiotics, and an amino acid called glycine can all help your body detox glyphosate and other herbicides and pesticides and keep your gut health in good balance.
